John E. Utsi
Filmmaker and Writer
Renowned Saami writer and filmmaker John E. Utsi brings his encyclopedic knowledge of the North to this project, along with tremendous passion for the subject.
John has produced many films for the Swedish Broadcasting Company. His credits include The Heart of Jojk, a documentary about Saami music; Nunavut, on Canada's new Inuit-managed territory; as well as a documentary on the reindeer industry titled The Guardian of the Reindeer. (When it comes to reindeer, John knows what he's talking about he owns his own herd).
From 1977 until the late 80s, John was a journalist and producer for Radio Sweden's Saami service. He went on to serve as a programmer and multi-media artist at the Swedish Mountain and Saami Museum in Jokkmokk. In 1990, John became TV producer at a Swedish TV station a job he kept until 1996.
In addition to his work in film and television, John is the author of several books and has been curator for a number of exhibitions about the Saami people.
Currently working as a journalist and writer, John is also producing a documentary to be called Saami, Guardians of the Last Wilderness.
