IMAX FILM GREAT NORTH WINS GRAND PRIX DU JURY
Montreal, February 6, 2001

Montréal, February the 6th, 2001– The IMAX film Great North was shown throughout the sixth annual Festival de films Grands Formats de la Géode in Paris. The film was presented more than 15 times from January 20 to February 4 at the Festival of large-format films. Following its deliberations yesterday, the jury chose Great North as the top film of the Festival. About a dozen films were competing for three awards: the Prix du public, the Prix de la jeunesse and the Grand Prix du Festival.

Québecer Martin J. Dignard, producer and director of Great North, attended the Festival to present his film. “I am very pleased to have won this prestigious award in the large format film industry. The competition was intense and my crew and I take great pride in the fact that the jury acknowledged the energy we devoted to making this film. There has already been a wonderful reaction to Great North right around the world, and the timing of this award comes just as we are holding the Canadian premiere this Thursday (February the 8th), with our business partners, friends and families in attendance.”

Great North, an exceptional film about the Québec north that focuses on the migration of the reindeer and caribou, has already won over critics internationally. Mr. Dignard and his crew devoted more than four years to developing and making this movie, which one critic hailed as “the most beautiful film ever made about the north (…) a masterpiece of cinematography”.

Great North at-a-glance: four months of filming, five tonnes of equipment, 300 hours of flying in eight helicopters, 27 charter flights, 300 barrels of fuel transported by 12 skidoos, boats and bush planes … and 6.6 kilometres of 65-mm film!

The Canadian premiere of Great North will be held February the 8th at Montréal’s Paramount IMAX® theatre, with dignitaries and partners in this great adventure in cinematography in attendance.

Great North is a TVA International production.
