Original Storyline

Next, through the eyes of Tuktu, we witness the passing of September, when the velvety covering on male antlers peels off in long strips, leaving the bare antlers blood red.

This startling phenomenon leads us to the mating season in late October. After a series of impressive battles, the males couple with their chosen mates, completing the cycle of reproduction. But there's no time for romance; caribou ovulate for only 48 hours. At the end of the mating season the males rid themselves of their heavy, awkward antlers. Next spring, they will start growing a new set all over again.
